1974

04.06.2010 09:10:48
It occured to me when we were listening to Ann's presentation that our Industry and company profile has changed dramatically over the last few years and most significantly from a Globalisation and multi-national perspective. We are all very familar with talking with international candidates every day, and can boast a number of overseas Offices and clients. The importance of understanding other languages, cultures and geographies is every bit as important as knowing your Clondalkin from your Coolmine. This is a tremendously exciting development for people like myself who studied languages and international business, and also gives me an excuse to talk about World Cup football.
You see, although my dad tells me that I watched the 1966 final, I know for a fact that we didn't have a TV, because he actually only got a phone in 1982. 1970 completely passed me by, but I have great memories of 1974. Not withstanding the fact that like most english people, I have still haven't forgiven Norman Hunter for missing that tackle on the half-way line in the Poland Qualifier when Brian Clough famously called the Polish keeper Tomacheski, (spelt wrong) a "clown" at half time. (His performance even surpassed Jimmy Montgomery in the Cup Final of the same year).
My Polish grandfather enjoyed the game more than us, and he was even more delighted as the likes of Smolarek & Lato excelled in the Finals in Germany. It is during occasions like the Finals that we get the benefit of seeing the many diverse nations get together and create a common language and a vast scope for global talking points.
Talking of change, one of the most one sided games of those Finals was the Yugoslavian defeat of Zaire by 9-0. Spot the new identities of the people who played under those countries flags at the time. And of course the DDR beat West Germany in the Groups.
The "Premiership" at the time had a very different international profile, the Drogba's Torres & Fabregas' of the day, were more likely to be John Giles, Joe Jordan, Leighton James & George Best..As we look forward to the Finals in 2 weeks, have an eye on the  countries involved. It's a tremendous opportunity to strengthen your bonds and empathy with your candidates, clients and colleagues. Best moment in 1974?? The Zaire Wall, Haiti taking the lead against Italy, the emergence of Holland & Johann Cruyft....

Cloud Computing

There was a good crowd at the Cloud Event tonight and the Stadium looks tremendous. Very interested to see the level of attendance and fantastic support from HP & MS.
There is a huge appetite to transform the way we use our IT Systems & evolve further into a much more Business focussed IT literate community.
Some good people offering guidelines on Cloud and it's options for all sizes of companies.
